The Abbey
Words by Aimee Eveleigh Gordon

The Abbey is a very grand, old-English, country-Manor villa in a very lush and green part of the most exclusive and opulent suburbs in Cape Town. Its architecture is gabled, arched and very aesthetically formidable – but still charming and warm. It lies on a huge property, its grounds filled with manicured topiaries, lemon trees, lime trees, herb gardens and huge ancient Oaks. The home and property overlook the entire False Bay-facing side of the exquisite Table Mountain range of mountain peaks, waterfalls and forests. The villa is very sophisticated and elegant in terms of its interior design. Lots of majestic entrance-ways, a grand swirling staircase and solid-wood Mahogany finishings reign throughout. The villa has a total of 5 bedrooms, and all of them have en-suite bathrooms and mountain and garden views. All bedroom suites have underfloor heating, air-conditioning and heated towel rails in their bathrooms. All bedrooms haved Plasma screen TVs with a satellite connection. The bedrooms lie on the upper floor of the home and this floor has two separate staircases. One is concealed and is intended for the servants discreet use. The Master suite has a simply vast balcony, which actually stretches out into it being more like a large, elevated patio. This space is luxuriously furnished with an outdoor lounge-suite and private dining area. The bedroom s decorative appeal is enhanced by the original Mieke artworks on the walls. Additionally, the room has a walk-in wardrobe and two, separate en-suite bathrooms – one for each person of the couple inhabiting it. . The home does, very importantly, have three levels or barriers of security. This includes the electric wire fencing, the impenetrable shatter-proof windows in the home, and the alarm s infrared beaming system

The lower level of the home is entered via a beautiful entrance hall, decorated in Persian rugs, gilted golden-framed mirrors and paintings and carved and ornate Mahogany finishings. The room veers off to the left to accommodate a private office/study and library and a formal living room. The formal lounge overlooks the gorgeous garden and mountain views and includes a gas fireplace and an enviable collection of rare antiques. The study has a wireless internet connection, phone line, printer, fax machine, and a switchboard intercom – allowing one to check in with family or kids by calling in from room to room. The entrance hall then veers off the right and opens up into three separate rooms. A guest cloak room, a large formal dining room and an open-planne lounge; kitchen and informal dining area. The formal dining room has a gas fireplace, seats ten people and has large double doors which open up onto the veranda. The kitchen is very well-equipped for large catering events. It has a bar-counter island which may be used as an additional work surface or as a bar or seating area for more informal gatherings. Aside from all the regular top-of-the-range appliances populating the kitchen, it has a built-in steamer, deep-fryer, a walk-in refrigerated room for stock-piling fresh produce, 2 dishwashers, an ice-fridge, and a garbage disposal unit. All surfaces are finished in beautiful marble Carrarra tops. The kitchen also has a laundry room, scullery and pantry room.

The lower level of the home has a separate recreation room. This room has an original solid wood pool table, and an arrangement of luxurious leather lounge furniture facing a huge, movie-theatre style projection screen. The outdoor patio is huge and is divided into distinctively different seating areas for various occasions. All the outdoor furniture including the dining and lounge area can seat a total of 48 people. It has two individual outdoor lounge-suite areas and an alfresco dining table seating around 20 people. The patio also has a fully-equipped gas barbecue facility. This entire area overlooks the beautiful, lanscaped garden and the phenomenally breathtaking mountain range. Alongside the 15 metre black pool at the bottom of the garden, lies a collection of sun-lounger furniture and ample umbrella shading. The black pool, by nature of its design, will stay lukewarm throughout summer and winter seasons.
