Fusion's most exceptional quality is the way it blends in with the mountain landscape. Visionary architect Greg Wright has created a magnificent villa that effortlessly becomes part of the rock and natural vegetation that surrounds it. This angular, double-layered home has been designed around giant quartz-encrusted boulders, milkwoods, yellow-woods and other indigenous plants. The owner was deeply involved in the planning, his influence pivotal to the incorporation of elements of the actual mountain into his home. The gently ascending external stairway is of a unique terrazzo quartz and the outdoor slatted decking of balau timber. A large 8 x 3 metre pool lies flush to the deck, its extra deep waters refreshing like a mountain pool. Fusions master suite rises from the pool deck. Large sliding doors open onto the pool area, and look beyond to the endless expanse of turquoise sea. The walls of the en suite bathroom are lined with quartz-side tiles, and timber planks cover the floor. A Jacuzzi-style bath is joined to a glass panel at eye-level with the lush back garden, the vegetation, wood and rock conspiring to give the effect of lying in a bath on the mountains forest floor. Australian chestnut floors spread throughout the homes main entrance. At the end of the passage is a neat, inconspicuous laundry room fully equipped with the latest machines. Bedroom two faces the garden, and has an en suite bathroom. Indonesian silk accents embellish bedroom three, a suite with stunning ocean views. This suites most exciting feature is its incredible shower, which is framed by glass on all four sides and looks out over a sheer drop to the road and the glistening bay beyond. Chestnut stairs wind their way up to the second level. This open-plan light-filled space emanates tranquility and stillness. The meditative quality of this main living area is enhanced by its pure and muted use of colour. Afghan rugs are scattered over the floor and a wood-burning fireplace warms up the room. The living and dining areas flow out onto a large balcony, the perfect location from which to enjoy the phenomenal sunsets that light up the coastline below. The kitchen is open-plan, making it simple to cook while entertaining guests. Entertainment is provided in the form of a plasma television, dvd and hi-fi systems. Views throughout the entire floor are breathtaking. Sections of the ceiling have been filled with clear glass, allowing the sun to stream into the rooms and offering magnificent views in all directions. A small corridor including a study area extends between the main house and the flatlet. The flatlet has its own private outdoor deck with ocean views and a separate entrance. It is fully equipped, with its own open plan kitchen and lounge space. The flatlets bedroom enjoys scenic views of the mountain vegetation and lush green floor. The choice of colours, materials, textures and design is exquisite, here as everywhere. Throughout the house, photographs taken by the well-travelled owner provide a glimpse into exotic other worlds, tribes and traditions, while the house itself magnifies the beauty of its own South African surroundings. The villa truly is a retreat for conscious living. |
